Comedy superstar Jerry Seinfeld expressed his dismay at the influence of political correctness on the entertainment business in a recent interview with The New Yorker. He said that television laughter is being undermined by the "extreme left and P.C. crap" [1]. Modern audiences do not congregate around TV to watch comedic shows, according to Seinfeld, whose namesake comedy was a huge smash in the 1990s. This is supposedly because writers and networks are overly concerned about potentially upsetting viewers [2].

The remarks made by Seinfeld went viral very fast, and far-right figures such as Dinesh D'Souza and Benny Johnson praised them as a monumental attack on "woke" society [3]. Despite his reputation for clean, inoffensive humor and his past criticism of the use of racial slurs non comedy, Seinfeld is an improbable hero of the regressive bandwagon [3:1]. Seinfeld went so far as to confess in the same interview with the New Yorker that he had never seen firsthand the demise of a joke due to interference from the network [3:2].

Acclaimed comedies such as Abbott Elementary indicate that there is still a need for the genre, even if the TV comedy scene has definitely changed in the streaming age [3:3]. It seems quite improbable that the PG-13 rating of Seinfeld's first feature film, Unfrosted, which is available on Netflix, would cause any waves [3:4]. Though he laments the industry's current situation, the comedian seems to be taking a back seat to political correctness in his most recent endeavor. Perhaps the most ironic part is that even Seinfeld and other straight-laced comedies feel pressured to criticize "wokeness" in order to maintain their popularity with conservatives.
